The National Museum of African American History & Culture

Last weekend I went to the District and of course I had to get to the Museum of African American History & Culture. I love visiting museums in different cities, and this has been on my radar since it opened. In the south, civil rights and the history of segregation is embedded in your education. You get pieces of the start of slavery here, a fact or two about the civil war there. But I never realized I didn’t understand the journey from beginning to end. We were taught the Louisiana Purchase until you can recite it in your sleep. But we never talked about its relation to slavery. This…

    Aerial Reflection

Small plane tours are my new favorite things. Talk about different perspective! I had been around the city for a week, walking all of it and it wasn’t until I was high in the sky that I saw a whole new place. Places that I walked blocks and blocks to get to were simply two blocks away had I gone left instead of right. I saw the layout of the city lead to the museum. The bricked part of the city outlines the water making it seem like a town within a town. I loved it, all of it! And it was up there looking at all God’s splendor that…

    Vancouver Art Gallery

Vancouver Art Gallery had a great exhibit recently centered around the architecture of a variety of dwellings. While it sounds a bit lackluster, architecture has always been interesting to me. Growing up in historic cities like New Orleans and Washington, DC will do it to you. I saw great ideas for sustainable housing ideas for the homeless, creative designs for the wilderness lodgers, and homes literally created out of the earth that surrounded them. It really gave me a new perspective, forced me to look at things outside of the norm. The rugged aesthetics weren’t my first choice of a Saturday exploration, but I’m glad I went. Often, we write…

    Creative Retreat in NYC

New York is the city that never sleeps—we know—so, you can get a great time in full of variety in 24 hours or less. I needed a creative reboot. Mundane marketing campaigns were draining me creatively and I was longing for a surge of artist appreciations and NYC never fails me. Rise and Shine My day began in Bryant Park where I was able to grab an overpriced latte (c’mon we’re in NYC after all) and a croissant. People watching was my task for the first hour. I watched them work, laugh, and move; children laughed with parents on the carousel and I smelled the warmth of the sun peek…

    Sometimes You Should Just Getaway

I went on a weekend getaway with my mom, and I’m so glad she made me go. I pushed the trip back twice before we set a date. Still, I was not excited to go because I had so much to do at work and I had a lot on mind. Personal, professional, and everything in-between clouded my thoughts day and night. And there was no way I should have been taking time off when I had so much to work on and work through. The questions just keep coming. Am I making the right choices? Should I wait on the new projects? Should I even bother? Questions we continuously…
