The Importance of Having a Support System

Good Morning Selfish Souls! Today is a great day and this week will be amazing. I’m ready for what is in store for me because my support system is so strong.

Yesterday was a hard day for me. I had a lot of emotional events– personal and professional– come together at once. I felt overwhelmed. Tears wouldn’t stop streaming. My mind from racing with all the hypothetical situations I was inventing in my head which made the situation worst.

There was a time when I would go lock up in my room and give up on the day. I would ignore communication and engage in unhealthy coping mechanisms. But this time, I was determined to take the bull by the horns.

Immediately, I called my support system. This team of friends were able to talk me off my ledge. They listened and only answered my questions I exhibited frustrations with when I was talking to them. Never did they make my situation about them or deflect the situation.

For me, speaking to more than one person on my support team offers different perspectives. If ever they say the same thing, I take it as confirmation, especially the people who don’t know each other.

And this is why it is essential to have a support system. You have a better chance of not going into a rut if you have friends encouraging you to do and be better. But it is important to realize that you do have them. Don’t expect them to read your mind. Speak up and tell them something is wrong. They care about you and want you to be your best self.
