    Palm Sunday

Yesterday was Palm Sunday. I went to church while visiting with my mom in Houston. I grew up in church, and while I am not a big believer of religion, I believe in spirituality. I am not here to convert you, I promise, but I do want to share something very profound the moment I heard it. Because it was Palm Sunday, the pastor spoke about the events that happened to Jesus. He rode in on a donkey, they waved palms symphonizing acceptance and peace, and that night Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane after the Lord’s Supper. In the garden, Jesus asked 3 of his disciples to keep…

    You Should be Reaching Out

Monday I wrote about having a good support system. But just as importantly, you should be reaching out to your friends to provide a good support system to them. Reaching out is a beneficial for your friends and for yourself. Reaching out to your friends let them know that you care about them. They can be assured that the energy they’ve vested in you is worth both of your time. You strengthen the bond and trust between the two of you. In return, reaching out makes us more empathetic to people and their situations. If we are conscious about what those around us are going through, we are more likely…

    Visiting Past Traumas

My alma mater honored my former team for athletic achievements we accomplished back when we were in college. While this sounds like an event that should be praised, it was daunting for me being in a place that made me revisit past traumas. I mean honestly who in their right mind really likes reunions? To get through the eventful weekend, I put some things together to help me cope with revisiting past traumas: Choose your plan. The weekend was full of events, so I chose to only do things I was comfortable with. I attended events that were in more public places to mingle with crowds not necessarily associated with…

How To Deal With Resurfacing Emotions

There are times when past feelings come back as resurfacing emotions.  A song, a movie, even a smell reminds us of things that used to be and sometimes those memories are painful.  It is hard to let go of the pain even when we want to, mainly when that pain was responsible for all the happiness at one point. Will, you ever get over it and how do you cope?  The answer is probably not. And that is okay. This lets you know that what you had is real. It will be easier to handle as time goes on. New memories will take place and replace the old ones. Or at…

    Emotional Purges Pt. 1

I’m getting exhausted just thinking about emotions. Confronting them has never come easy to me and it is always an Act of Congress to get me to express them. Pride, independence, and emotional immaturity (as a psychiatrist so eloquently put it) made emotions a form of kryptonite for me. Growing up in a family where we did not discuss emotionally difficult situations often crippled my ability to connect with people later in life. When my young adult relationships suffered because those people thought my lack of emotional expression meant a lack of concern in general, I sought to do something about it. I turned to writing. Purging my feelings through…
